The Portland motorcycle scene is, for lack of a better word, robust. While I grimace when anyone mentions “keep Portland weird,” it’s the truth.
With clouds rolling in around October and not retreating til June, there aren’t many normal reasons for the cageless to gather here. In the face of adversity, the city owes much of its moto scene to some key players. Enter See See Motor Coffee Co., half custom bike shop, half coffee shop, all character.
When you walk into the cafe you’re greeted by custom bikes, the smell of Stumptown’s finest, and a slew of piston heads in various states of disrepair. This is a second home for those out on a ride and unwilling to patronize the mermaid.
After getting your coffee, you’ll sit down and notice the best part about this refuge — the people. The 20-something retiree actively perusing the internets for god knows what. The 60-something Klim-wearing globetrotter. The guy who looks like he might eat children, but has a phone full of photos of his beloved weiner dog. If you find yourself willing to stop and chat, you might be surprised.
Once you’ve sipped enough caffeine to jump start a race horse, take a stroll through the gear and parts shop. Here you can pick up those riding pants you’ve never seen in person, or get advice on your latest carb issue from the staff. They can point you in the right direction because, behind all this coffee nonsense, is the real soul of this place — the shop that produces custom bikes unlike any you’ve ever seen. And they don’t stop there. See See’s bring us Dirt Quake, Happy Hour Hot Dogs, classic movie screenings (Knightriders!) and of course The One Motorcycle Show.
See See’s brings so much to Portland and asks for so little in return. Call it a renaissance, call it a movement, call it whatever you want. See’s See’s injection of style, culture and fun help make Portland special.
If you’re ever in the area, stop by, enjoy a quick bite, and strike up a conversation with the person next to you. At the very least you’ll end up with an memorable experience.
